Genetic
Counselor
Duties and Responsibilities: Genetic
counselors are health professionals who are trained to help families understand
genetic disorders and to provide information and support to those families.
They may also serve as patient advocates by referring individuals or families
to local services that can be of assistance. Genetic research is a powerful tool for treating medical
conditions, but it is still a new tool. Many people whose families are affected
by genetic disorders don't understand how it will affect their lives. Even
genetic researchers and doctors don't fully understand how genes cause all
genetic disorders. Genetic counselors work with doctors and families to help
families get the information they need to understand the disorder.
Salary: $65,677
Education: Genetic
counselors help educate people about their chances of inheriting genetic
disorders or diseases using information from a patient's family medical
history. They explain possible testing options and provide support to patients
and family members. They also might educate other healthcare professionals,
students and the public about genetic disorders. A master's degree in genetic
counseling is required for most genetic counselor positions, and some states
require licensure and/or certification. The following table lists the most
common requirements for becoming a genetic counselor.
Would you like to be a Genetic Counselor? Why? Why not?
I would like
to become a Genetic Counselor, because I think to help out anyone with any
problems they have and help provide from the rest of their families to get it.
